Fence Repair and Deer Fencing in Orinda, CA

Short answer

Orinda caps fences at 6 feet anywhere on a lot, and within 5 feet of a street property line a fence must be open and no more than 4 feet tall (OMC §17.4.27). That is below the 7–8 feet UC IPM suggests for deer, so most Orinda deer fencing encloses gardens rather than property lines.

Deer fencing within a 6-foot cap

UC IPM says deer normally won’t jump 6 feet but can clear 8 feet on level ground, and on slopes fences may need 10–11 feet (UC IPM). With a 6-foot cap, options are:

  • Enclose the vegetable garden and fruit trees with their own fence, inside the lot;
  • Secure the bottom and keep gates as tall as the fence and closed;
  • Ask Orinda Planning before planning anything over 6 feet.

Fire

Orinda has the most Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone acreage in Contra Costa County, and the Moraga-Orinda Fire District runs its own hazard maps and fuels program (MOFD maps). If the adopted Zone 0 rules take effect, Orinda’s Very High areas would be among the first affected: no combustible fences attached to homes, and no new combustible fencing within 5 feet. They are not in force today. Options and status.

Moraga

Moraga shares the fire district and a lot of the same terrain. We haven’t confirmed Moraga’s fence height rules for this site; check with the Town of Moraga before building.

Common Orinda jobs
